Postmodernism May be the Genesis of recent Conspiracy Theory

December 10th, 2011

Postmodernism as a broad intellectual, social and literary movement is hard to capture and define, not more so because of the deliberate wishes of the some of it protagonists for the paradigm to remain enigmatic. As many Post modernists question the practice and prorogation of meta and universal theories grounded in frameworks of “truth”, there are obvious overlaps between Postmodernism, Philosophy and also the Social Sciences. This is when it comes to both subjects of data and the products of research and literature. For Postmodernism, the role, use and application of theory are not only seen pivotal to epistemological questions but have fundamental consequences on conceptions of reality.

An area completing overlooked may be the relationship between Conspiracy Theory and Postmodernism. One tenet of Postmodernism, because the name directly suggests, would be that the analysis of data, society and ontology takes a framework that moves past the universal rationalism espoused by the enlightenment period. Enlightenment bore the objective of the birth of Modernity but has become dead. We therefore require a post-modern theory to secede the shackles of the Modern period. For the sake of brevity, this usually entails contextual sensitivity and relativism as opposed to universalism and absolute truth.

Although Conspiracy Theories will always be present throughout history, the genesis from the modern day conspiratorial phenomena is taken to be that of JFK. This saw the inception of a Meta Conspiracy Theory in which political phenomena was not what it really seemed. Behind what seems to be the establishment there’s a ruling elite, a company of individuals who behave as puppet masters; the actual elite behind the masquerading elite.

This undoubtedly gave rise, during the last 40 years, to Meta conspiracy theories encompassing the Illuminati, The Bilderberg Group, The Freemasons and also the New world Order. It then began to propagate Meta historical continuing conspiracy theories. For example the brand new World Order or Illuminati does not juts control all of the facets of political, economic and social activity but this plot continues to be deliberately designed and executed throughout history. This changes the dimension of contemporary conspiracy theory from being just Meta causal to being all historically encapsulating. This ushered in new questions, not just of current affairs but of the nature and validity of history itself.

This above illustrates one aspect of modern conspiracy theories subsumed through the Postmodern tradition. For contemporary conspiracy theorists, we now require a philosophy and conceptual framework that moves beyond the enlightenment period’s proposals of Liberalism and representative Government. This is because on the planet of conspiracy theorists the second paradigms are evidentially fallacious. We therefore need new theories to look at incidents such as JFK, the Iraq war, 911 and observable inequalities in wealth and living standards. For the exclaimer of conspiracy, old political ideologies and theories of Government, society and civil interaction are inept. Instead conspiracy theory serves as a better explanation for the post modern world.

It’s these arguments advanced by conspiracy theorists to accommodate the post modern political world that paradoxically has its own roots in the Postmodernist tradition. Certain facets of Postmodernism entail a revamped romanticism, the vacuum left out through the insufficient claim to universal truth and data is filled by an epistemological tendency “that anything goes”. In a Postmodern world by which scientific states “true knowledge” are questioned and merely called social constructionism – that it’s the social process and practices of institutions such as Universities and scientists that perpetuate science as “truth”; the discourse of science for many Postmodernist is filed under oppressive regimes that perpetuate universal truth.

Instead Jacques Derrida’s notorious Deconstruction Theory comes vividly to life for the reason that any subject matter isn’t just available to interpretation however the probabilities of interpretation are endless. In today’s world we have seen conspiracy theorists operating within this framework. Mistrust in scientific facts and also the agents of established social institutions, particularly those who endorse the official account of 911 is along with the two the power and license to look at phenomena such as 911, the Iraq war, JFK and also the banking crisis and interpret them in any way possible. In fact this is incredibly salient for conspiracy theorists. The Deconstruction Theory rings true in that the narrative of Conspiracy Theory is applicable to the phenomena imaginable. Postmodernists scream out that any phenomena are open to infinite alternative accounts and conspiracy theorists seize around the opportunity.

Ironically underneath the Postmodernist tradition Conspiracy Theory falls victim to its own claim and get of “truth” through its very own self created discourse. By dismissing the “truth” presented by established institutions, conspiracy theorists explicate their own version of “truth”. However both opposing factions are discourses and Conspiracy Theory mirrors the account of Liberal Government but with its very own formation of “truth”.

Postmodernism under Foucault and Derrida pronounced prophetic one liners such as “discourses forms of objects which they speak” and thus instead of “truth” standing outside narratives and discourses, the separation is not possible as discourses themselves form “truth” and “reality” inside a circular and interlocking manner.

The special moment of Flexibility – Evolutionism, Creationism, and NLP

December 10th, 2011

Not long ago i was driving on a single from the long and open California Highways, lost during my own thoughts, when i heard a minimal and raspy voice tearing with the thin garments of my mental imagery. Radio stations station I happened to be on presented seemingly rational and specific arguments from the evolution theory, and in the defense of creationism.

“How peculiar,” I thought to myself, “to attempt and resolve such a complex matter in an ‘either or’ fashion proved to be misguided previously, didn’t it?”

When i was contemplating the issue, two key laws of Neuro-Linguistic Programming, also called NLP and Neurolinguistics, found mind: Law of Requisite Variety and Hierarchy of Ideas.

What the law states of Requisite Variety continues to be adopted by social science from cybernetics. In simplified form it means that the one with the most flexibility of behavior controls the entire system. For instance, children often exhibit vastly larger flexibility of behavior than adults. Screaming bloody murder, throwing your self on the floor, and rolling over the aisle while kicking the floor to get the toy or candy of one’s present desire would meet the meaning of behavioral flexibility.

Since most of us had the pleasure to be either participant or a sympathetic observer of these behavioral fireworks in local supermarkets, it is rather clear that generally the kids were in charge of the situation. Among my buddies mentioned an instance by which her 3-year old son chose to exercise his lungs and rolling abilities within the living room, while demanding desert instead of the dinner. She chose to join the festivities and outdo the behavioral flexibility of her child by rolling harder and screaming louder. A moment later she noticed her son stopped the show and was staring at his mother with bafflement and concern. In this case my pal exhibited larger behavioral flexibility and also got back in control of the situation.

Hierarchy of Ideas is yet another important NLP law, which states that the one who controls the level of abstraction within the communication, controls the communication itself. Any issue that comes to mind could be “chunked down” toward more specificity, or “chunked up” toward more generalization and abstraction. For instance, let’s take a car for example (I love my car). To “chunk down” toward additional information you could ask “Which car specifically do you have? Honda, Beamer, Mazda?” And to “chunk up” toward more abstraction you can ask “What is car an example of?” Well, an automobile happens to be an illustration of transportation.

The beauty of NLP is in its vast scope of applications, from therapy and business, to arguments together with your spouse and customer support. In the end, Neurolinguistics is really a study of communication, and we communicate constantly. Why don’t we return to the specific argument of creationism vs. evolutionism, when we’re putting our flexibility hat on, and becoming ready to move these supposedly opposite issues toward higher level of abstraction. First, shall we agree that rather than only two possible standpoints of either evolution or creation there might be more possibilities and combinations? Let’s wait and watch.

What’s the purpose of creationism?

The reason for it is to know the world around us in the entire diversity, as well as our place in it.

And an amount be the intention of that?

Perhaps, to understand the laws of creation and also the laws from the Divine.

To understand the Laws…for what purpose?

To get a glimpse in to the Divine, and ultimately, a much better understanding of ourselves, humans.

What’s the intention of better understanding ourselves?

To be more responsible for ourselves, our destiny, and also the world around us.

And what would function as the purpose of that?

To understand and strive toward actualization of our true potential, to become a harmonious part of creation (in Divine’s grace), and ultimately, to be happy.

Now, let’s examine the scientific aspect. What’s the reason for the evolution theory?

The idea attempts to explain the planet around us and its origins, such as the origins of humans.

For what purpose?

Possibly, to know ourselves and the world around us.

And what is the aim of that?

Perhaps, to master ourselves and our world.

For what purpose?

To satisfy our potential, our creative genius, and ultimately, to be happy.

As we engage in this Hierarchy of Ideas game, keeping our “Law of Requisite Variety” and adaptability hat on, look for something interesting. There’s really no conflict between the ideas of Creationism and Evolution, can there be?

On one hand, the Divine doesn’t operate having a magic wand, and things do not just come out from the blue, do they? (Well, except your In-Laws). The Divine operates through Laws and Principles, which science explores via a variety of methodologies and tools.

On the other hand, scientific methodology is clearly limited and science has a summary of phenomena so it cannot adequately and fully explain at this time. You don’t have to appear far – human body and mind have plenty of yet resolved mysteries and abilities beyond current scientific understanding, such as The Placebo Effect. After we agree to keep a balanced view as well as an attitude of curiosity, we make the initial step toward deeper understanding of ourselves and our world.
